‘Femmes et toréador’ translates to ‘Women and Bullfighter’. These themes are central in Pablo’s oeuvre, bordering on obsession. The piece evocatively pictures a bullfighter approaching two nude women, and though the work is comprised of only a few lines, it conveys a great deal of movement, intimacy, and drama. One woman appears to present the other to the bullfighter, creating a dynamic moment of intimacy and power between the subjects where the tables have been turned. By combining these two themes, Picasso invites the viewer into an intimate scene that doubles as an ode to bullfighting and its layered symbolism.
About The Technique:
This work was conceived in 1968 and produced in a limited run of 500, featuring simple lines and natural earth tones. The ceramic is marked “MADOURA PLEIN FEU” and “EDITION PICASSO” on the underside, confirming its authenticity.
